Chinua Achebe's "Things Fall Apart" (1958) depicts the impact of colonialism on:

Question

Accepted Answer

Igbo society in Nigeria. The correct answer is Igbo society in Nigeria. The novel follows Okonkwo, a respected leader in the fictional village of Umuofia, as his traditional Igbo world is disrupted by the arrival of European missionaries and colonial administrators. Achebe wrote the novel partly in response to European representations of Africa (especially Conrad's "Heart of Darkness"), aiming to tell the African story from an African perspective.

Indian society under colonialism is the subject of Forster's "A Passage to India" and other works. Japanese culture is not the novel's setting. South African apartheid is addressed by writers like Nadine Gordimer and J.M. Coetzee. Achebe specifically chose the Igbo community in southeastern Nigeria, drawing on his own heritage.

"Things Fall Apart" is important for the CLEP exam as one of the most influential post-colonial novels and the most widely read African novel in English. Students should understand the novel's title (from Yeats's "The Second Coming"), its portrayal of pre-colonial Igbo culture as complex and sophisticated, and Achebe's critique of European colonial narratives. The novel demonstrates that African literature can rewrite the story that colonialism told about Africa.
