(Net Sales − Cost of Goods Sold) / Net Sales. The gross profit margin is calculated as (Net Sales − Cost of Goods Sold) / Net Sales, or equivalently, Gross Profit / Net Sales. Gross profit is the difference between what a company earns from selling its products (net sales) and what it costs to produce or purchase those products (COGS). A gross profit margin of 40% means that for every dollar of sales, 40 cents remains after covering the direct cost of the goods sold.

Net Income / Net Sales is the net profit margin, which measures overall profitability after all expenses. Operating Income / Net Sales is the operating profit margin, which includes operating expenses but excludes interest and taxes.
