He argued that civil magistrates had no authority over religious matters  -  a radical idea of church-state separation. He also insisted that the colonists' royal charter was invalid because the land belonged to Native Americans who had not been fairly compensated. These views threatened both the political authority and the land claims of the colony's leadership, leading to his banishment in 1636.

Williams did not advocate for women's participation in church governance  -  that controversy was associated with Anne Hutchinson, who was banished from Massachusetts in 1638 for her role in the Antinomian Controversy. Advocating Catholicism would have been unthinkable in Puritan New England, where anti-Catholic sentiment was deeply entrenched. Similarly, calling for a royal governor would have undermined the self-governance that the Massachusetts Bay Colony prized under its charter.

After his banishment, Williams founded Providence and the colony of Rhode Island, which became a haven for religious dissenters and practiced an unprecedented degree of religious tolerance.
