The inability to understand that others may have perspectives different from one's own. In Piaget's theory, egocentrism during the preoperational stage (approximately ages 2-7) refers to the cognitive limitation of being unable to take another person's point of view. Egocentric children assume that others see, think, and feel exactly as they do. Piaget's classic demonstration was the "three mountains task," in which a child was asked to describe what a scene looked like from a different person's viewpoint  -  preoperational children consistently described their own perspective instead. This is a cognitive limitation, not a personality flaw or moral failing.

"Selfish or narcissistic behavior resulting from poor..." confuses Piaget's technical term with the everyday meaning of "egocentric" as selfish. Piaget did not view egocentrism as a character flaw or the result of bad parenting  -  it is a normal, universal feature of cognitive development at this stage. While Piaget's specific claims about egocentrism have been challenged by research showing children have more perspective-taking ability than he believed, the general principle that young children struggle with perspective-taking remains well-supported.
