Self-regulated learning involves students who:

Accepted Answer

Set goals, monitor their progress, and adjust their learning strategies based on outcomes. Self-regulated learners actively take control of their own learning process by setting specific goals, selecting and deploying appropriate strategies, monitoring their comprehension and progress, and adjusting their approach when strategies are not working. This cyclical process, described in models by Zimmerman and Pintrich, includes three phases: forethought (goal-setting and planning), performance (strategy use and self-monitoring), and self-reflection (evaluating outcomes and adjusting future approaches). Self-regulated learning is one of the strongest predictors of academic success.

Following teacher instructions without question describes compliant behavior but lacks the self-directed agency and strategic thinking that characterize self-regulated learning. Self-regulated learners are proactive rather than merely reactive. Learning best only when working with a tutor describes dependency on external support, which is the opposite of self-regulation. While collaboration and guidance are valuable, self-regulated learners develop the ability to manage their own learning independently. Relying exclusively on memorization represents a single, surface-level strategy, whereas self-regulated learners employ diverse strategies and adapt their approach based on the demands of the task.

Teachers play a crucial role in developing students' self-regulation skills through explicit instruction and modeling. Strategies include teaching students to set specific, measurable learning goals; providing self-monitoring tools like checklists and learning logs; teaching a repertoire of learning strategies and when to use each one; creating opportunities for self-assessment and reflection; and gradually releasing responsibility for learning management from teacher to student. Research shows that self-regulation can be taught and that students who receive this instruction show improved academic performance across subjects.
