Tracking (also called ability grouping or streaming) is the educational practice of sorting students into different academic programs, courses, or ability groups based on perceived academic ability, standardized test scores, or previous achievement. Students may be placed in college preparatory, general, or vocational tracks, each with different curricula, expectations, and resources. Tracking begins as early as elementary school (through reading groups) and becomes more formalized in middle and high school.

From a functionalist perspective, tracking is efficient because it allows schools to tailor instruction to students' ability levels, challenging advanced students while providing additional support to struggling ones. However, conflict theorists and educational sociologists have documented serious problems with tracking. Research shows that track placement is strongly correlated with race and socioeconomic status  -  students from disadvantaged backgrounds are disproportionately placed in lower tracks, while affluent and White students are overrepresented in higher tracks, even when controlling for prior achievement.

Once placed in lower tracks, students receive less rigorous instruction, have access to fewer resources, develop lower expectations, and form peer groups that may discourage academic effort. This creates a self-fulfilling prophecy in which initial placement  -  which may be influenced by bias  -  leads to outcomes that appear to confirm the original sorting. Critics argue that tracking reproduces and legitimizes social inequality by channeling students from different backgrounds into different positions in the social hierarchy, all under the appearance of meritocratic sorting based on ability.
