According to Frederick Herzberg's Two-Factor Theory (also called the Motivation-Hygiene Theory), motivator factors are intrinsic to the work itself and can lead to job satisfaction when present. Achievement, recognition, the work itself, responsibility, advancement, and personal growth are all motivator factors. When these factors are present, employees experience genuine satisfaction and motivation.

"Company policies" (company policies), "Working conditions" (working conditions), and "Salary and job security" (salary and job security) are all "hygiene" factors (also called maintenance factors). Hygiene factors are extrinsic to the work itself and relate to the work environment. When hygiene factors are inadequate, they cause job dissatisfaction. However, when they are adequate, they do not actively motivate employees  -  they merely prevent dissatisfaction.

Herzberg's key insight is that satisfaction and dissatisfaction are not opposite ends of the same continuum but rather two separate dimensions. Improving hygiene factors can eliminate dissatisfaction but cannot create motivation.
