Question

Accepted Answer

The inherent dignity and equal rights of all human beings regardless of nationality, race, or gender. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948), adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, reflected Western civilization's evolving commitment to the inherent dignity and equal rights of all human beings regardless of nationality, race, gender, or other characteristics. Drawing on Enlightenment concepts of natural rights, the horrors of World War II and the Holocaust, and the emerging international human rights movement, the Declaration established a common standard of fundamental freedoms including the right to life, liberty, equality before the law, freedom of expression, and protection from torture.

The Declaration was not about the supremacy of one culture - while it drew heavily on Western philosophical traditions, it was drafted by an international committee that included representatives from diverse cultural backgrounds, and it aimed to articulate universal values applicable to all peoples. The elimination of all national governments was not proposed - the Declaration was adopted by an organization of sovereign states and was intended to guide national policies rather than replace national governance. The establishment of a single world religion was not contemplated - the Declaration explicitly protects freedom of religion and belief, including the right to change one's religion or to hold no religion.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a fitting concluding topic for the CLEP Western Civilization II exam, as it represents the culmination of centuries of Western thought about individual rights, human dignity, and justice. Students should understand its historical context, its intellectual roots in Enlightenment philosophy, its relationship to the horrors of the 20th century, and its ongoing significance as a standard for evaluating governments and societies worldwide.
