A Type Ia supernova occurs when a white dwarf in a binary system accretes matter from a companion until it reaches the Chandrasekhar limit and undergoes thermonuclear detonation. Both types briefly outshine entire galaxies.

A star that gradually dims over millions of years could describe the late stages of some stellar evolution scenarios, but this is the opposite of a supernova, which is an extremely rapid and energetic event. A new star forming from a collapsing gas cloud describes star formation (protostar), not a supernova. A close encounter between two stars might lead to tidal interactions or mergers, but this alone does not define a supernova.

Supernovae are among the most important topics on the DSST Astronomy exam because they connect stellar evolution, nucleosynthesis, and cosmology.
