A Decision Support System (DSS) is designed to:

Question

Accepted Answer

Help managers analyze data and make semi-structured and unstructured decisions. A Decision Support System (DSS) is an interactive computer-based system that helps managers analyze complex data, model different scenarios, and make semi-structured and unstructured decisions. DSS tools include what-if analysis, sensitivity analysis, goal-seeking, and simulation models that allow managers to explore alternatives and evaluate potential outcomes before making decisions.

Replacing managers by automating all decisions overstates the role of DSS; these systems support human decision-makers rather than replacing them, particularly for the complex, judgment-based decisions they are designed to address. Processing routine transactions describes a TPS function, not a DSS, which handles non-routine analytical tasks. Storing and retrieving documents describes a document management system, which serves an information organization purpose rather than the analytical decision support that DSS provides.

Decision Support Systems are an important information systems category on the DSST exam. Students should understand how DSS differs from MIS (DSS handles non-routine, ad hoc analysis while MIS produces scheduled reports), the components of DSS (database, model base, user interface), and how managers use DSS tools like what-if analysis and simulation to improve decision quality.
