What is radioactive half-life?

Question

Accepted Answer

The time required for half of the atoms in a sample of a radioactive substance to decay into daughter products. Radioactive half-life is the time required for exactly half of the atoms in a sample of a radioactive isotope to undergo radioactive decay, transforming into daughter products (which may or may not be radioactive themselves). For example, if a sample contains 1,000 radioactive atoms and the half-life is 10 years, after 10 years approximately 500 original atoms remain, after 20 years about 250, and so on. Half-lives are constant for each isotope and range from fractions of a second (for highly unstable isotopes) to billions of years (for nearly stable ones like uranium-238, with a half-life of 4.5 billion years).

The time for complete non-radioactivity would theoretically be infinite, as radioactive decay is exponential and never quite reaches zero; half-life describes a specific, measurable interval. "Half the lifespan of an atom" misinterprets the concept; individual atoms decay randomly, and half-life is a statistical property of large numbers of atoms. The radiation emitted in half a second is a rate measurement (activity), not a half-life.

Radioactive decay and half-life are important topics on the DSST Principles of Physical Science I exam. Students should be able to calculate the amount of radioactive material remaining after a given number of half-lives, understand the exponential nature of decay, and know common applications of half-life in radiometric dating (carbon-14, uranium-lead), nuclear medicine, and nuclear waste management.
