CLEP Test Day: What to Bring and What to Expect

Everything worth knowing about CLEP test day fits in two sentences. Bring valid ID, your registration ticket, and two No. 2 pencils; nearly everything else, phones, smartwatches, notes, personal calculators, is banned from the testing room. For most exams you will know your score before you leave the building, or before you close your laptop if you tested from home. (This page covers logistics only. What to bring (test center)

• Your valid registration ticket for the specific exam title, from your My CLEP student portal, plus any forms your test center requires.
• Two No. 2 pencils with good erasers. Mechanical pencils are prohibited, so bring the plain kind.
• Valid ID. See the ID requirements section below for exactly what counts.

One cost to plan for separately: most test centers charge a nonrefundable administration fee, paid directly to the institution. The amount and payment method vary by center, so check with your specific test center ahead of time to see how much you should pay and how to pay it.

ID requirements

Your ID needs to check every one of these boxes:

• Government issued, and an original physical document, not a digital copy or photocopy.
• Valid and current, in good condition.
• Full name in English characters that exactly matches your registration ticket. A middle initial is optional, but the first letter of your first and last name must match.
• A recent, recognizable photo and your signature.

If you fail to present appropriate ID, you will not be tested. Two cases have their own path:

• Military. A Geneva Conventions Identification Card is accepted in place of a standard government ID.
• Homeschoolers and high schoolers under 21 without a government-issued ID can use a Student ID Form instead. It is valid for one year, needs a photo with the school or notary seal overlapping the photo, and must be signed before a school official or a notary.

What you can't bring

Test centers screen for a long list of prohibited items. Grouped, it comes down to four categories:

• Electronics. Mobile phones, smartwatches, smart glasses, fitness trackers, watches with alarms, separate timers, Bluetooth or wireless devices, and flash drives. A simple, non-digital watch is fine.
• Writing and reference materials you bring yourself. Pens, highlighters, mechanical or colored pencils, dictionaries, books, and any papers of your own. Scratch paper is provided by the test center administrator, so you never need to bring your own.
• Calculators and measuring tools. Personal calculators of any kind, plus slide rules, protractors, compasses, and rulers. See the calculators section below for what the exam software actually provides.
• Everyday items that create a security or storage problem. Food, beverages, tobacco, hats (except for religious reasons), hooded clothing, bags, backpacks, purses, wallets, and outdoor wear.

Calculators

Personal calculators are never allowed. When an exam needs one, it is built directly into the exam software:

• Four-function calculator: Financial Accounting.
• Scientific calculator (TI-30XS MultiView): Chemistry, College Algebra, College Mathematics.
• Graphing calculator (TI-84 Plus CE): Calculus, Precalculus.

Every other CLEP exam does not use a calculator at all.

Testing from home via remote proctoring

CLEP also offers remote proctoring, so you can test from home instead of driving to a center. The requirements are stricter about your equipment and environment because nobody is watching in person.

• Equipment. A Windows 10 or 11 desktop or laptop with Chrome 100 or higher. Macs, tablets, Chromebooks, and mobile devices are not supported, and you cannot use multiple monitors or a dual-screen setup.
• Environment. You test alone in a private room for the entire exam, not in a public space. Your computer and keyboard sit on a desk or tabletop, and you use a standard chair, not a bed, couch, or overstuffed chair.
• Note-taking. No paper. You may use a whiteboard with a dry erase marker, or a single transparent sheet protector with a dry erase marker.
• Check-in. A Proctortrack proctor reviews a live face scan, ID scan, and room scan before testing begins. The ID standard is the same as the test center: a government-issued physical ID with your name, photo, and signature in English characters, or a current military photo ID.

During the exam

CLEP exams are approximately 90 minutes and consist mainly of multiple-choice questions. Two exceptions: College Composition and Spanish with Writing include an essay section, and the World Language exams include listening sections.

College Board's official bulletin lists taking excessive or extended unscheduled breaks as testing misconduct. Beyond that, there is no published, definitive break policy to state either way, so plan your exam sitting around not needing one.

The official guidance on arrival is general, not a specific minute count: arrive early enough to find a parking place, locate the test center, and get settled comfortably before testing begins. Give yourself a reasonable buffer using your own judgment for the specific center and time of day.

After the exam

For almost every CLEP exam, you get an instant unofficial score on your screen the moment you submit. The two exceptions are College Composition and Spanish with Writing, where the essay section is hand-scored and your score is not available until roughly 2 to 3 weeks later, with an email notification when it is ready.

A few logistics worth knowing ahead of time: retaking an exam requires waiting at least 3 months from your initial test date, and testing again sooner invalidates that administration, cancels the score, and forfeits the fee. A remote-proctored exam is refundable only if canceled within 7 days of purchase, excluding exams or fees already redeemed, and switching a booking from a test center to remote proctoring may carry a $10 rescheduling fee.
