What is the primary purpose of using a rhetorical question in an essay?

Question

Accepted Answer

To engage the reader and provoke thought without requiring an answer. Using a rhetorical question engages the reader and provokes thought without requiring a direct answer. This technique draws readers into the argument by encouraging them to consider the question themselves, which creates a sense of participation and can make the writer's subsequent points feel more compelling and relevant.

Demonstrating the writer's uncertainty about the topic is the opposite of what a rhetorical question achieves; rather, it typically implies that the answer is obvious and thereby strengthens the writer's position. Replacing a thesis statement at the beginning of an essay misunderstands the function of a rhetorical question, which supplements rather than substitutes for a clear thesis. Satisfying a requirement for interrogative sentences trivializes the strategic purpose of rhetorical questions and reflects no understanding of their persuasive function.

Rhetorical strategies are a major component of the DSST exam. Students should understand how various techniques - including rhetorical questions, analogies, repetition, and appeals to ethos, pathos, and logos - function within different writing contexts to achieve specific effects on the audience.
