Best free resources for CLEP Humanities (and which to skip)
CLEP Humanities is unusually well-served by free resources: Khan Academy Smarthistory covers visual arts at college depth, Project Gutenberg has the full literary canon, and Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy is the definitive free reference for every philosopher the exam tests. Music and performing arts thin out faster on the free side. This guide walks per-resource use, sequencing, and three free 'resources' that waste your prep time.

Free study resources for CLEP Humanities include Khan Academy Smarthistory (the best free visual-arts resource on the internet), the Metropolitan Museum's Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History, the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, Project Gutenberg for canonical literature, Yale Open Courses for music, and the Modern States voucher path. Skip generic CLEP "study guide" PDFs and uncurated YouTube playlists, both miscalibrated to what this exam actually tests.
CLEP Humanities is the rare CLEP where a free-only path is realistic for three of the five disciplines. Visual arts has Smarthistory, one of the best free educational resources on the internet for any subject. Literature has Project Gutenberg, which holds the full text of nearly every canonical work the exam tests. Philosophy has the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, the canonical free reference for every philosopher the exam tests, at depth that exceeds what the exam asks for.
Music and performing arts are where free coverage thins out. Yale Open Courses publishes Craig Wright's MUSI 112 Listening to Music, but 23 hours of lecture is a heavy commitment, and the course runs through Romanticism more thoroughly than the 20th century. For performing arts the free landscape is patchier still.
I took this exam for my degree at Thomas Edison State University, where it filled the HUM 101 + HUM 102 slots for 6 credits in one sitting. The constraint when I prepared was the music section and the recognition layer across all five disciplines, where free resources fall down. The Flying Prep CLEP Humanities plan fills the recognition gap with spaced-repetition flashcards on the artworks, composers, authors, philosophers, and movements the exam tests, plus full-length practice exams scored on the 20 to 80 ACE scale. The $10 official CLEP Examination Guide PDF is the cheapest worthwhile complement.
Khan Academy Smarthistory: the best free visual-arts resource on the internet
Khan Academy Smarthistory is a partnership between Khan Academy and an editorial team of art historians. The site organizes the Western art-history canon by era and movement, with deep-dive essays on individual works (Caravaggio's , Velázquez's , Picasso's ) plus survey essays on movements (Italian Renaissance, Baroque, Impressionism, Cubism, Abstract Expressionism).
Frequently asked questions
Can I pass CLEP Humanities using only free resources?+
Yes for the input layer, with caveats. Smarthistory, Project Gutenberg, and SEP collectively cover three of the five disciplines (visual arts, literature, philosophy) at survey level. Yale OYC covers music if you have 23 hours to spend. The free landscape on performing arts is thinner. The bigger gap is the recognition-and-drill layer: the exam is 140 questions in 90 minutes, 39 seconds each, and recognition speed develops by practicing in the exam's format with explanations on wrong answers. The official $10 CLEP Examination Guide PDF is the highest-leverage cheap addition. Past that, the trade-off is between paid practice and accepting a thinner pass margin.
Which free resource is best for the music section?+
Yale Open Courses MUSI 112 with Craig Wright, by a wide margin. There is no second-best free music source close to it in quality. The catch is the 23-hour time commitment and the lighter 20th-century coverage. Most readers watch 8 to 12 hours of selected lectures rather than the full course.
Is the Modern States course worth doing?+
Yes for the voucher. No for the course content. The course is shallow and not calibrated to the current exam outline; readers who study from it as their primary resource regularly score at or below the ACE passing line. Worth 1 to 2 hours of clicking through to qualify for the $97 voucher. Ignore the content.
Alex Stone founded Flying Prep after earning her bachelor's degree from Thomas Edison State University using 27 CLEP and DSST exams to test out of 99 credits. She built Flying Prep to help working adults and returning students take the same path.
The match to the exam's visual-arts content is unusually clean. The exam tests recognition of major works, movements, and artists; Smarthistory organizes its content exactly that way. Read the survey essays for each major movement and skim the deep-dive essays on the most-tested works, and the visual-arts portion of the exam is covered at the right depth.
Use it for: the primary visual-arts layer. Read by era from antiquity forward.
Skip: Smarthistory for music, literature, philosophy, or performing arts. The site is visual-arts focused.
Time budget: 6 to 10 hours.
Three of five humanities disciplines have world-class free coverage. The trick is the sequence.
Metropolitan Museum's Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History: depth on architecture and decorative arts
The Met's Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History is a free reference written by Met curators, organized by geographic region and period. The Met's strengths in architecture, decorative arts, and non-Western art mean the Timeline fills gaps Smarthistory leaves: gothic cathedral architecture, ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian art, Islamic art, East Asian art. The trade-off is that the essays are dense and run deeper than the exam tests.
Use it for: architecture, decorative arts, and non-Western art coverage. Skip: the Timeline as your primary visual-arts source; Smarthistory is better organized for survey-level prep. Time budget: 2 to 4 hours.
Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy: definitive reference, graduate-level depth
The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy is a peer-reviewed reference hosted by Stanford. Every entry is written by a recognized scholar and updated as scholarship advances. It is the definitive free reference for academic philosophy.
The philosophy section is roughly 10 percent of the exam, the smallest slice of the five disciplines. SEP has entries on every philosopher the exam tests: Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, Aquinas, Descartes, Hume, Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Wittgenstein, Sartre. The trade-off is depth: a typical entry runs 8,000 to 20,000 words at graduate-level rigor, far past what recognition prep needs.
Use it for: the philosophy layer, with curation. Read the opening section of each entry (typically 500 to 1,000 words covering the philosopher's main ideas and place in the lineage). Skip: reading SEP entries end-to-end. Time budget: 3 to 5 hours across 20 to 25 philosophers.
Project Gutenberg: free full-text editions of the canon
Project Gutenberg holds free, public-domain editions of more than 70,000 books, including the full text of nearly every canonical work the literature section of the exam tests: Beowulf, The Canterbury Tales, the Shakespeare plays, Paradise Lost, Don Quixote, Pride and Prejudice, Moby-Dick, Huckleberry Finn, Crime and Punishment, Madame Bovary. Anything published before roughly 1928 is on Gutenberg.
The exam tests literature at recognition level. You need to recognize that Beowulf is Anglo-Saxon, that Chaucer wrote in Middle English, that Don Quixote is Spanish, that Cervantes and Shakespeare were near-contemporaries. The right use of Gutenberg is to skim the opening pages of a work to anchor the recognition: the strange diction of Beowulf sticks better after you've seen it on the page than after a Wikipedia summary.
Use it for: the literature anchoring layer. Pick 20 to 30 canonical works across eras and read the first chapter or 20 pages of each. Skip: reading any canonical work cover-to-cover. Moby-Dick is 600 pages; the first three chapters are the right depth. Time budget: 6 to 10 hours across 20 to 30 works.
Norton Anthology table-of-contents pages: a canonical-list filter
The Norton Anthology of English Literature and Norton Anthology of American Literature publish their tables of contents on Norton's promotional pages. The lists serve one purpose: figuring out which works are canonical enough to be on the exam. If a work made the Norton Anthology, it is likely tested in some form. If it didn't, the exam probably won't ask about it. Work through the Norton TOC as a checklist of authors to look up on Gutenberg rather than browsing 70,000 free texts blind.
Time budget: under 1 hour to pull the lists and cross-reference against Gutenberg.
Yale Open Courses: Craig Wright on Western music
Yale Open Courses hosts free recordings of undergraduate lectures, including Listening to Music (MUSI 112) with Craig Wright. Wright is one of the most-respected music-history teachers in academia, and the course covers Western music from Gregorian chant through the late Romantic era across 23 hour-long lectures. There is no free music-history resource for this exam that comes close in quality.
The catch is the time commitment. Twenty-three hours is a serious chunk of a 40 to 80-hour prep plan, and the course runs deepest on medieval through Romantic music while the exam also tests the 20th century.
Use it for: the primary music-history layer, or as targeted reinforcement on Baroque, Classical, and Romantic eras. The early lectures on listening fundamentals (rhythm, melody, harmony, form) build the vocabulary the exam asks about. Time budget: 8 to 23 hours. Even 8 hours of selected lectures moves the needle on the music section more than any other free resource will.
Crash Course on YouTube: accessible overviews, not deep coverage
Crash Course on YouTube has playlists relevant to several of the exam's disciplines: World History, Literature, Philosophy. Episodes are 10 to 15 minutes each, fast-paced, accessible. The literature and philosophy playlists are decent first passes if you have zero background, but neither covers the canon at the depth the exam tests, and the catalog doesn't cover music or visual arts well.
Use it for: ambient first-pass orientation on literature and philosophy. Time budget: 2 to 4 hours, optional.
OpenCulture and MIT OpenCourseWare: discovery and deep dives
OpenCulture aggregates free educational resources (university courses, films, audiobooks, language lessons). For humanities prep, OpenCulture is a discovery layer: a place to find that a particular opera recording, philosopher lecture, or public-domain audiobook exists. Aggregator quality varies, so treat the site as a search index, not a source. Time budget: under 1 hour as needed.
MIT OpenCourseWare hosts free course materials including philosophy, literature, and music courses. A typical MIT humanities course is 30 to 50 hours of work for graduate-quality depth on a narrow topic (a single philosopher, a single literary period). For survey-level CLEP prep that depth is mis-targeted; use only for optional deep dives. Time budget: 0 to 4 hours, optional.
Modern States: take the course for the voucher, study elsewhere
Modern States is a non-profit that offers free online CLEP courses with a $97 exam voucher awarded on completion. The voucher covers the full CLEP exam fee, so completing the Modern States Humanities course is the closest thing to free college credit you will find.
Use it for: the voucher. Sign up, complete the minimum work to qualify, claim the voucher, apply it at registration. Skip: the actual course content. The Modern States Humanities course is shallow and inconsistent across the five disciplines, lectures sit at closer to high-school depth, and practice questions are not calibrated to the current outline. Use Smarthistory, Gutenberg, SEP, and Yale OYC for input. Time budget: 1 to 2 hours.
What to skip
Generic "CLEP Humanities study guide" PDFs from non-authoritative sites. Search results surface dozens of free PDFs from sites that are not College Board, not Modern States, and not a recognized publisher. Most are copy-paste content with factual errors and outdated information. The cost is not just reading wrong information; it is also unlearning it when you hit a calibrated source.
Free practice question banks from random aggregators. Calibration is poor: questions are written without reference to the current outline, answer keys often contain errors, and almost none come with explanations. The practice questions in the official $10 CLEP Examination Guide PDF are worth more than 200 free questions from an aggregator.
Wikipedia rabbit-holes without structure. Individual Wikipedia entries on Caravaggio, Beethoven's Eroica, or Kant's Critique of Pure Reason are fine for looking up a single term. As a primary study resource Wikipedia is poor: no chapter order, no clear scope, and the internal-link structure rewards lateral browsing over depth.
YouTube uploads of feature-film adaptations flagged as "study material." The exam tests Hamlet, Pride and Prejudice, and Moby-Dick at recognition level, not the film adaptations. A three-hour film is a slow way to confirm that Shakespeare wrote Hamlet. Use Gutenberg's text and spend the time saved on the other four disciplines.
Where free resources fall short: music and performing arts
The music section is roughly 25 percent of the exam, and Yale OYC's 23-hour Wright course is the strongest free option. Outside of MUSI 112 the free music landscape thins out fast: Khan Academy's music coverage is sparse, and Open Yale's other music offerings are graduate-narrow. The pillar's recommendation of Grout's A History of Western Music is there because for music, paid texts still beat free alternatives on coverage-per-hour.
Performing arts is roughly 15 percent of the exam, split across drama, dance, and film. Drama is partly covered by literature exposure (Shakespeare, Greek tragedy, Ibsen, Chekhov), but dance and film recognition rely on broad cultural familiarity that no single free resource organizes.
Net: a free-only path is realistic for visual arts, literature, and philosophy. For music and performing arts, either invest the 23 hours in Yale OYC, accept thinner coverage, or supplement with paid materials. Smarthistory plus Gutenberg plus SEP collectively cover three of the five disciplines at survey level, which is why this exam tolerates a free-resource-led approach better than most CLEPs.

Official CLEP Examination Guide + Flying Prep
One or two full-length practice exams with score review.
Phases 0 through 5 cover the input layer with free resources. Phases 6 and 7 are where free stops being enough. The exam is 140 recognition-based questions in 90 minutes (the tightest pacing of any CLEP at 39 seconds per question), and recognition speed develops only by drilling under exam-style conditions across all five disciplines. The Flying Prep CLEP Humanities question bank handles that layer: spaced-repetition flashcards on every artwork, composer, author, philosopher, and movement the exam tests, full-length practice exams scored on the 20 to 80 ACE scale, and a confidence score per discipline so you know where you are weak. The $10 official CLEP Examination Guide PDF is the official complement.

Do I need a paid textbook for CLEP Humanities?+
For visual arts, literature, and philosophy, no. Smarthistory plus Gutenberg plus SEP cover those three disciplines at the right depth, for free. For music, the calculus is closer: Yale OYC is excellent but long, and Grout's A History of Western Music covers the same ground in faster reading time. If music feels weakest and the 23-hour Yale commitment is unworkable, a used copy of Grout is the strongest single-volume alternative. For visual arts, Janson's History of Art is comparable to Smarthistory in coverage; either works, but Smarthistory is free and Janson is not.
What's the best free way to drill recognition speed?+
There isn't a strong free answer. The exam tests recognition under tight pacing (39 seconds per question), and the only way to build that speed is to drill exam-format questions with explanations on wrong answers. Free aggregator question banks for CLEP Humanities are miscalibrated and explanation-free. The official $10 CLEP Examination Guide PDF includes a small set of calibrated practice questions written by the people who write the actual exam; that is the highest-leverage cheap addition to a free-only plan. The Flying Prep question bank handles the larger drill volume.
Should I read whole works on Project Gutenberg, or skim?+
Skim. The exam tests recognition, not close reading. Reading the first 20 pages of Beowulf, The Canterbury Tales, Don Quixote, and 20 other canonical works anchors recognition more effectively than reading any one of them cover to cover. Save the deep-reading time budget for the other four disciplines.
Is Smarthistory enough for the visual arts section on its own?+
For most readers, yes. The site's coverage of Western art from antiquity through the 20th century is comprehensive and matches the exam's organization. Heilbrunn adds value on architecture and non-Western art. If you read Smarthistory's survey essays for every major era and supplement with Heilbrunn on architecture, the visual-arts section is covered.
What about Princeton Review or REA CLEP Humanities prep books?+
Both exist under $25 used. Question style is workable but editions run a few years behind the current exam outline, and the explanations compress humanities understanding into date-and-name memorization, which is the opposite of how this exam rewards study. The exam rewards thematic recognition (this work is Baroque, this composer is Classical, this philosopher is Enlightenment), not pure date memorization. Workable as a backup question source if you are committed to staying off subscription products; pair with the official CLEP Examination Guide for calibration and treat the prep book as a question source, not a study guide.
