Free study resources for CLEP Principles of Management include OpenStax Principles of Management (the standout, a complete free college textbook), Khan Academy economics and finance modules, OpenLearn management short courses, Harvard Business Review's free articles, Saylor Academy business courses, and the Modern States voucher path. Skip generic CLEP "study guide" PDFs from non-authoritative sites, sketchy aggregator practice questions, and LinkedIn Learning trials that auto-bill if you forget to cancel.
CLEP Principles of Management is one of the CLEPs where the free landscape is genuinely competitive with paid prep, and the reason is one specific resource: OpenStax publishes a complete, free, peer-reviewed Principles of Management textbook that maps directly onto the exam's content outline. Most CLEPs lack a free textbook of that caliber. This one has it.
The other reason free resources work is that the named-framework load is finite. Roughly 50 named theories, models, and frameworks across the four management functions carry the bulk of the recognition points: SWOT, Porter's five forces, Maslow, Herzberg, McClelland, expectancy, equity, goal-setting, reinforcement, trait theory, Fiedler's contingency, path-goal, transformational versus transactional leadership, feedforward versus concurrent versus feedback control, mechanistic versus organic structures, line versus staff, span of control. A free textbook plus a free flashcard tool drills the entire list.
Working managers come in with substantial baseline; the exam asks you to attach named labels to instinctive practice. I took this exam for my degree at Thomas Edison State University, where it filled the MAN 301 slot. The prep was mostly vocabulary attachment, not new conceptual learning. Free resources can absolutely carry that work.
OpenStax Principles of Management: the standout free textbook
OpenStax Principles of Management is published by Rice University's OpenStax initiative, peer-reviewed by management faculty, and free in HTML and PDF. The book is structured around the four management functions (planning, organizing, leading, controlling) plus chapters on strategy, organizational structure, motivation, leadership, communication, control systems, change, ethics, and entrepreneurship. Every chapter ends with key-term glossaries and review questions.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pass CLEP Principles of Management with only free resources?+
For most working managers and many returning students, yes. OpenStax Principles of Management is a complete free textbook covering every named framework on the exam. Saylor BUS208 adds structured pacing and unit quizzes. Quizlet (after cross-checking) drills the named-framework recognition layer. The College Board's free sample calibrates question style. The one place free resources are weaker than paid is exam-style drill volume with explanations and full-length scored practice; a free-only path can still pass, especially if you grade your weakest content areas honestly and re-study them.
Is OpenStax *Principles of Management* enough on its own?+
For the content layer, mostly yes. OpenStax covers the four management functions, strategy, motivation theories, leadership theories, organizational structure, control systems, change, and ethics at the depth the exam tests. What it does not give you is exam-style multiple-choice drill or full-length practice exams; for that, you need a question bank. The trade-off is curation: the book runs ~600 pages, so skim aggressively and slow down only on chapters covering content you have not absorbed through experience.
Is the Modern States course worth doing?+
For the voucher, yes. For the course content, no. The course is shallow and the practice questions are loosely calibrated to the current exam style. Worth 1 to 2 hours of clicking through to qualify for the $97 exam voucher; not worth more than that. Use OpenStax, Saylor BUS208, and a curated flashcard set as the real content inputs.
Alex Stone founded Flying Prep after earning her bachelor's degree from Thomas Edison State University using 27 CLEP and DSST exams to test out of 99 credits. She built Flying Prep to help working adults and returning students take the same path.
The match to the CLEP exam is closer than any other free resource, and closer than most paid resources. The exam's content outline tracks the standard introductory-management course taught from textbooks like Robbins and Coulter; OpenStax covers the same ground at the same depth. Every named framework on the exam appears with definition, context, and worked example.
The weakness is length. The book runs roughly 600 pages in PDF form. Read end to end, that is 40 to 60 hours, which is more than the exam justifies for a working manager who already has the baseline. The right way to use OpenStax for CLEP prep is to skim, not read: scan section headers and key-term boxes, slow down only on chapters covering content you have not absorbed through work experience. For most readers that means slowing down on motivation theories, leadership theories, organizational structure, and control systems.
Use it for: the primary content reference across the entire exam. Read the four-functions chapters and the leadership and motivation chapters carefully; skim everything else.
Skip: trying to read the book cover to cover. The exam tests recognition of named frameworks, not synthesis of every chapter.
Time budget: 10 to 20 hours of focused skimming.
One complete free textbook, half a dozen complementary free tools. Working managers can run nearly the entire prep without paid resources.
OpenLearn management modules: structured short courses
OpenLearn is the free-learning arm of the UK's Open University. The "Money and Business" section hosts dozens of short management courses, two to twenty hours each, on organizational behavior, leadership, change management, motivation, and decision-making. Each course is structured with sections, activities, and self-check questions.
The match to the exam is partial. The conceptual coverage on leadership, motivation, change, and structure aligns with what the exam tests. The trade-off is UK orientation: examples reference UK companies and labor markets, and terminology occasionally drifts from US business school standards. The frameworks themselves are the same; the framing differs.
Use it for: structured supplementation when OpenStax feels too dense. The shorter OpenLearn courses work well as commute or evening additions.
Skip: OpenLearn as the primary input. The depth is shallower than OpenStax on the named-framework load.
Time budget: 2 to 8 hours, opportunistic.
Khan Academy economics and finance: indirect but useful
Khan Academy does not publish a dedicated management course. What it does publish, free, is a strong macroeconomics track, a microeconomics track, and a finance-and-capital-markets track. The CLEP Principles of Management exam touches financial control systems and ratio analysis at recognition level, and Khan Academy covers that baseline well.
The match is narrow but useful. The exam asks recognition-level questions about budgets as control mechanisms, the rough categories of financial ratios (liquidity, leverage, activity, profitability), and break-even analysis. Khan Academy's finance track covers all of these.
Use it for: the financial-control and ratio-recognition layer, especially if you have not taken an accounting or finance course. Watch the ratio analysis and break-even videos.
Skip: Khan Academy as a management course. It is not one.
Time budget: 1 to 3 hours.
Saylor Academy BUS101, BUS208, BUS209: free courses with quizzes
Saylor Academy is a free, non-profit online learning platform with structured courses on business and management. The most relevant for this exam are BUS101 Introduction to Business, BUS208 Principles of Management, and BUS209 Organizational Behavior. Each course is built around an internal syllabus, organized into units, and ends with a free certificate exam (the certificate is not college credit; the value is the structure).
Where OpenStax is a textbook and OpenLearn is a set of short courses, Saylor is a full course experience: assigned readings, embedded videos, unit quizzes, and a final exam. BUS208 Principles of Management is the closest free analogue to a college course on the subject, and its syllabus covers the four functions, strategy, motivation theories, leadership theories, organizational structure, control systems, and change. The unit quizzes give recognition-style practice that mirrors CLEP question style at coarser resolution.
Use it for: structured pacing if you prefer a course over a textbook.
Skip: the certificate. It does not count for college credit. Treat Saylor as content, not credential.
Time budget: 8 to 15 hours if BUS208 is the primary course path.
Harvard Business Review free articles: named-framework primary sources
Harvard Business Review publishes two articles free per month for unregistered visitors, plus an always-free "Ideas" section with curated short pieces. The HBR archive includes original articles by the management thinkers whose frameworks the exam tests: Michael Porter on competitive strategy and five forces, John Kotter on change management and leadership, Peter Drucker on management practice, Henry Mintzberg on organizational structure.
The match is partial but high-value where it lands. Reading the original short article that introduced a framework (Kotter's 1995 "Leading Change," Porter's "What is Strategy") fixes the framework in memory more durably than a textbook summary. The weakness is variability: HBR is opinion-driven business journalism, and the exam is not testing the cutting edge of management thought; it is testing the textbook canon. Read HBR for memorability on canonical frameworks, not for theoretical breadth.
Use it for: anchoring one or two of the harder-to-remember named frameworks. Read Kotter's "Leading Change" for change management; read a Porter five-forces piece for strategic management.
Skip: HBR as a study spine. It is a supplement.
Time budget: 1 to 3 hours.
MIT OpenCourseWare Sloan: depth beyond what the exam tests
MIT OpenCourseWare Sloan School of Management hosts free graduate-level management course materials: lecture notes, reading lists, problem sets, sometimes video. The match is loose. MIT Sloan content is MBA-level, substantially deeper than what the CLEP Principles of Management exam tests (the exam targets a single-semester undergraduate introductory course). MBA-depth treatment of leadership, motivation, or strategy adds context but rarely changes a recognition-question answer.
Use it for: targeted deep reinforcement on a single weakest area, if OpenStax and HBR coverage feels thin.
Skip: MIT OCW as a study spine. It is overkill for this exam.
Time budget: 0 to 3 hours, only on weakest area.
Crash Course Economics and Business: commute video overviews
Crash Course on YouTube hosts free Economics and Business video series. The Business series covers entrepreneurship, marketing, finance, and management topics at high-school survey level; the Economics series covers macro, micro, and basic finance. Each episode is 10 to 15 minutes, watchable on the commute or at the gym. For readers who learn better from video than text, this is a low-cost first orientation. The depth is well below what the exam tests, so this is supplement only.
Use it for: commute-friendly first orientation if management vocabulary feels foreign.
Skip: Crash Course as a primary input. Too shallow for the exam's named-framework load.
Time budget: 1 to 4 hours, opportunistic.
College Board sample questions: small but calibrated
The official CLEP Principles of Management page hosts a small set of free sample questions. The set is small (a handful of items, not dozens), but each question is written by the same people who write the actual exam, so the calibration on question style, distractor construction, and difficulty is exact.
Use it for: one calibration pass early in prep, to see how the exam phrases recognition questions and how the wrong answers are constructed.
Skip: treating the sample as drill volume. Twenty minutes exhausts it.
Time budget: 30 minutes.
Quizlet flashcard decks: variable quality, useful when curated
A search for "CLEP Principles of Management" on Quizlet returns thousands of user-created flashcard decks ranging from accurate and comprehensive to error-ridden. The strength is volume and convenience: many decks track the textbook chapter by chapter, and the spaced-repetition study mode is solid.
The weakness is quality control. User-created decks frequently contain wrong definitions or conflated frameworks (Maslow and McClelland mixed up is the classic). A single wrong definition memorized hard is worse than not knowing the term at all. Use Quizlet decks only after cross-checking each card against the OpenStax glossary.
Use it for: drilling named-framework recognition after you have a baseline. Pick a high-rated deck, cross-check the first 20 cards against OpenStax, and if those check out, run the deck.
Skip: trusting any deck blindly. This exam's content is heavily memorization-driven and the deck space is full of errors.
Time budget: 3 to 8 hours, paired with cross-checking.
Modern States: take the course for the voucher, study elsewhere
Modern States is a non-profit offering free online CLEP courses with a $97 exam voucher awarded on completion. The voucher covers the full CLEP exam fee, which is the largest single cost in self-paced CLEP credit, so the Modern States completion is one of the most valuable free moves you make.
Use it for: the voucher only. Sign up, click through at minimum effort, complete the qualifying assessment, claim the voucher, apply it at registration. The voucher saves $97 on the exam fee.
Skip: the actual course content. The Modern States Principles of Management course is shallow, the video lectures move slowly, and the practice questions are loosely calibrated to the current exam style. Treat it as a financial logistics step, not a study path. Use OpenStax, Saylor BUS208, Quizlet (curated), and your paid practice bank as the real study inputs.
Time budget: 1 to 2 hours for voucher logistics.
What to skip
Generic "CLEP Principles of Management study guide" PDFs from non-authoritative sites. Most are copy-paste content, years out of date, and sometimes mix CLEP Principles of Management with DSST Principles of Supervision or DSST Organizational Behavior content. Stick to OpenStax, Saylor, and the College Board sample.
Free aggregator practice-question banks. The aggregator sites that show up alongside "CLEP practice questions" in search results are written without reference to the actual exam's content outline, contain answer-key errors, and rarely include explanations. The official College Board sample is small but accurate; everything past that is better served by a paid practice bank.
LinkedIn Learning free trials that auto-bill. The trial requires a credit card and auto-bills at $39.99 per month if you forget to cancel. The management courses are professionally produced but calibrated to working-professional skill development, not CLEP exam content. Set a calendar reminder if you start a trial; otherwise stick to OpenStax and Saylor for free structured content.
AI-summary "cheat sheets" that conflate frameworks. Free AI tools and aggregator sites publish "summary cheat sheets" that frequently conflate similar named frameworks (Maslow with McClelland, equity with expectancy, Fiedler's contingency with path-goal). The exam tests precise recognition of which framework says what; a cheat sheet that blurs the differences will cost you points. Build your own summary from OpenStax glossary entries.
How to combine free resources into a complete plan
The Flying Prep approach for this exam pairs free resources for almost all the content input with a paid practice bank for exam-style drill. Free resources can carry roughly 80 percent of the prep, possibly more for working managers with baseline experience. The paid layer is small but load-bearing: the Flying Prep CLEP Principles of Management practice bank for drilled exam-style multiple-choice questions across all four functions, with explanations on wrong answers, plus full-length practice exams scored on the 20-to-80 ACE scale.

Exam-style multiple-choice questions across all four functions; review every wrong answer.
9. Full-length practice
1 to 2
Flying Prep practice exam
One or two full-length 90-minute runs; review weak content areas.
Phases 0 through 7 run almost entirely on free resources. Phase 8 is where exam-style multiple-choice drill volume with explanations and confidence scoring requires a paid source. Phase 9 is where a full-length scored practice exam against the 20-to-80 scale gives you a real estimate of where you stand before sitting for the actual exam.
The honest claim: OpenStax Principles of Management plus the Modern States voucher path can carry an entire successful prep for this exam, especially for working managers who already have the baseline. Free resources are unusually strong for this exam, stronger than for most CLEPs in the catalog. The paid layer adds drilled question volume and full-length scoring, which sharpens the prep but is not strictly required for a pass.

Do I need a paid textbook for this exam?+
No. OpenStax Principles of Management covers the same ground as the canonical paid textbooks (Robbins and Coulter, Daft, Schermerhorn) at the depth the exam tests. If you already own one of the paid textbooks, use it. If not, do not buy one for this exam.
Are LinkedIn Learning free trials worth it?+
Cautiously, and only if you set a hard calendar reminder to cancel before the auto-bill. The management courses are professionally produced but calibrated to working-professional skill development, not CLEP exam content. The exam tests recognition of named academic frameworks (Maslow, Herzberg, Fiedler), which the professional courses spend less time on. OpenStax and Saylor are a better fit.
What about Quizlet flashcard decks?+
Useful, with a hard caveat: cross-check every deck against OpenStax before relying on it. User-created decks frequently conflate similar frameworks (Maslow with McClelland, equity with expectancy), and a wrong definition memorized hard is worse than not knowing the term. Once a clean deck is in hand, the spaced-repetition mode drills named-framework recognition efficiently.
Are Princeton Review and REA prep books worth buying?+
Not the right fit for this exam. Both lean on content summaries that are no better than OpenStax (free), and both calibrate practice questions to a generic CLEP style rather than the management-specific recognition focus the actual exam tests. The named-framework recognition layer is better drilled by a free textbook plus a focused practice bank than by a paid prep book that splits attention across both.
How long does a free-only prep typically take?+
For a working manager with baseline experience, 15 to 25 hours of OpenStax skimming plus Quizlet drill plus the College Board sample is realistic. For a returning student without management experience, 30 to 45 hours is more honest: textbook skim at 15 to 20 hours, framework drill at 8 to 12, financial-control layer at 1 to 3, and orientation and review at 5 to 10.
