CLEP Principles of Management vs DSST Organizational Behavior: applied management or behavioral foundations?
Two 3-credit business-cluster exams that overlap on the leading function but diverge in scope. CLEP Principles of Management is broader and more applied (the four management functions plus the major theories within each). DSST Organizational Behavior is deeper on the psychological foundations of individual and group behavior. Together they fill different course slots; the leading-function prep overlap means studying for both is more efficient than studying for either alone.

CLEP Principles of Management and DSST Organizational Behavior are two 3-credit business-cluster exams that overlap on the leading function but diverge in scope. Principles of Management is broader and more applied; Organizational Behavior is deeper on the psychological foundations of individual and group behavior.
If your degree program requires the management core (most undergraduate business degrees), take CLEP Principles of Management. If your program specifically requires Organizational Behavior (some MBA prerequisites, applied-psychology paths, the TESU PSY 361 slot), take DSST Organizational Behavior. If your business cluster has slots for both, take both. The leading-function overlap means a single block of motivation-theory and leadership prep covers a large chunk of each exam, which is rare across the CLEP and DSST catalogs.
I took both exams for my degree at Thomas Edison State University: Principles of Management filled the MAN 301 slot, Organizational Behavior filled the PSY 361 slot. That mapping is worth knowing before you register, because TESU is one of the few schools that uses the two exams for different departments. At most schools the mapping shape is the same (one slot in management, one slot in psychology or upper-business), but the specific course numbers vary.

The headline contrast: applied management practice versus behavioral foundations. Principles of Management asks how managers do the work. Organizational Behavior asks why people in organizations behave the way they do. Same credit value, same multiple-choice instant-score format, substantial overlap on the leading function, divergent scopes everywhere else.
Why this comparison matters
Both exams sit in the business cluster on every Big Three degree audit, and both get casually grouped as "the management exam." That grouping confuses students at the registration step, because the two exams reward different prep patterns and fill different course slots.
CLEP Principles of Management is built around the four management functions. About 40 percent of the exam tests planning, organizing, leading, and controlling directly. Another 20 to 25 percent tests motivation and leadership theories within the leading function. The remainder splits across strategic management, organizational structure, control systems, change, and ethics. The exam rewards recognition of named frameworks attached to applied management activities: SWOT for planning, span of control for organizing, Maslow and Herzberg for leading, feedforward and feedback control for controlling.
DSST Organizational Behavior is the inverse exam in shape. Roughly 75 percent of the questions split evenly across three levels of analysis: individual processes (motivation, perception, attitudes, personality), group processes (teams, communication, leadership, conflict), and organizational processes (culture, structure, decision-making). The remaining 25 percent splits across change management and a small "other" category. The exam is essentially applied psychology with named theories attached to every concept. Where Principles of Management asks which control system a manager would use, Organizational Behavior asks how Schein's three-level model of culture interacts with a change initiative.
The leading function is the bridge. Both exams test Maslow's hierarchy, Herzberg's two-factor, expectancy theory, equity theory, goal-setting theory, the contingency leadership theories (Fiedler, Hersey-Blanchard, path-goal), and the transactional-transformational continuum. A student preparing for one exam already covers a meaningful share of the other's leading-function content. This is unusual. Most CLEP and DSST pairs share almost no prep transfer, so the leading-function overlap is a real planning advantage if both exams are on your degree audit.
So when a student asks "which is the easier 3-credit business exam," the right answer is that they reward different baselines. A working manager with applied experience and finite vocabulary review will pass Principles of Management comfortably. A reader with a psychology background or strong theoretical patience will find Organizational Behavior more natural. They are not interchangeable, and treating them that way is the most common mistake at this fork.
Two 3-credit business exams, two course slots, one large overlap on the leading function.
CLEP Principles of Management: deep dive
The applied-management exam. 100 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes. Roughly 40 percent of the questions test the four management functions (planning, organizing, leading, controlling) directly. Another 20 to 25 percent tests motivation and leadership theories. The remainder splits across organizational structure, control systems, organizational change, and ethics. The exam is multiple-choice only, the score is final at submission, and you see it on screen the moment you click submit.
Where the credit lands. A passing score (ACE 50 on the 20-to-80 scale) earns 3 semester hours, applied to a single-semester introductory management course. At TESU the exam clears MAN 301; at Excelsior and Charter Oak the mapping is the same shape under their course numbers. The official CLEP Principles of Management page carries the content outline and the ACE recommendation. The ACE National Guide carries the underlying credit recommendation; the binding policy is the receiving school's transfer table.
Difficulty. Medium-easy for working managers, medium for everyone else. If you have managed people (formal direct reports, project leadership, cross-functional coordination), most of the underlying concepts are already familiar. The prep is largely about attaching named frameworks to instinctive practice. Where I took this exam at TESU, the controlling function tripped me up more than the leading function, because most prep materials over-invest in motivation and leadership theory and under-invest in feedforward, concurrent, and feedback control systems. Plan extra time there.
Prep time. Plan 20 to 35 hours if you have not taken a management course in the last few years. Working managers with daily exposure can pass with 10 to 15 hours of focused vocabulary review. The two activities that carry most of the value are spaced-repetition drills on the named frameworks (SWOT, Porter's five forces, the major motivation theories, the major leadership theories, control system types) and full-length practice exams to lock in pacing.
Materials. Lead with Flying Prep CLEP Principles of Management. The platform handles every named framework the exam tests with spaced-repetition flashcards, full-length practice exams scored on the 20-to-80 ACE scale, and a confidence score per content area. The official CLEP Examination Guide for Principles of Management is the highest-quality external sample-question source. Robbins and Coulter's textbook is the canonical reference for filling in any framework gaps.
DSST Organizational Behavior: deep dive
The behavioral-foundations exam. 100 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours. Roughly 75 percent of the exam splits across three levels of analysis: individual processes (about 25 percent), group processes (about 25 percent), and organizational processes (about 25 percent). The remaining 25 percent covers change management and a small "other" bucket. Questions are recognition-driven: a scenario describes a manager's approach, a team interaction, or an organizational pattern, and you identify which named theory or model fits.
Where the credit lands. A passing score (ACE 400 on the 200-to-500 scale) earns 3 semester hours. The slot mapping is more variable than most DSSTs. TESU maps the exam to PSY 361, a psychology department slot, which is unusual but reflects the exam's applied-psychology character. Excelsior and Charter Oak more often map it to a business or management slot. The official DSST Organizational Behavior fact sheet carries the content outline; the ACE National Guide carries the credit recommendation; the binding policy is your receiving school's transfer table.
Difficulty. Medium. The exam expects you to recognize Maslow versus Herzberg, expectancy versus equity, transactional versus transformational, mechanistic versus organic structure, and Schein's three-level model of culture. About 25 to 35 named theories or frameworks across the four content areas drive the bulk of the points. Theories that sound similar are the trap: Maslow's hierarchy and Alderfer's ERG are different but related; Herzberg's hygiene factors and the satisfaction-dissatisfaction continuum are easy to confuse. When I took this exam at TESU, the pairs that often appear together as distractors needed an extra review pass.
Prep time. Plan 25 to 45 hours if you have not taken an organizational-behavior or industrial-psychology course in the last few years. Working managers with regular exposure can pass with 12 to 20 hours of focused vocabulary review. The exam rewards recognition over application, so flashcard-style drills on named theories beat reading chapter-length explanations.
Materials. Lead with the Flying Prep DSST Organizational Behavior prep tool when it lands in the catalog. The DSST Organizational Behavior fact sheet on the Get College Credit site is the official content outline. Robbins and Judge's Organizational Behavior is the canonical reference for filling in named-theory gaps.
By-persona recommendations
TESU, Excelsior, or Charter Oak generalist degree. Take Principles of Management first. The exam is shorter (90 minutes versus 2 hours), the prep is faster for working adults, and the four-management-functions structure is intuitive. Add Organizational Behavior second if your degree audit has a slot for it. At TESU specifically, that slot is PSY 361 rather than a second management slot, which is worth flagging: the two exams do not compete for the same course requirement on TESU's audit, so taking both is additive rather than redundant.
Working manager (formal or informal direct reports). Take Principles of Management first. The exam rewards exactly the practice you have already absorbed: planning quarters, organizing teams, leading people, controlling outcomes. The four-functions framework formalizes language you already use. Twenty hours of named-framework review converts daily management practice into 3 college credits. Add Organizational Behavior second if your degree audit needs the second slot; the leading-function content carries over, so the additional prep cycle is shorter than it looks.
Pre-MBA applicant. Take both. Most MBA programs accept lower-division business credit from CLEP and DSST as undergraduate prerequisite coverage for the management foundation and the organizational behavior foundation. The two exams together clear a meaningful chunk of the pre-MBA undergraduate business core in a single calendar quarter. Confirm with the specific MBA program's admissions office before sitting; a small number of selective MBA programs require the prerequisite courses be taken at a regionally accredited institution rather than tested out via CLEP or DSST.
Returning student in psychology. Take Organizational Behavior first. The exam reads as applied social and industrial psychology with named theories attached, and a psychology background gives you a head start on motivation theories, perception, attitudes, group dynamics, and decision-making. At TESU, the PSY 361 mapping is a clean fit. Add Principles of Management second if your degree audit also covers a management slot; the leading-function overlap means the prep cycle is shorter than for most CLEPs.
Homeschooler stacking credit before college. Take Principles of Management first. The exam vocabulary is finite, the question style is straightforward, and the score is instant. A focused 30-hour prep cycle around a single textbook plus practice exams is enough for a confident pass. Add Organizational Behavior second only if the destination school's transfer table accepts DSST at all and the family has built a base in social or industrial psychology. For homeschool families whose business-cluster prep is built on general management exposure (Khan Academy, OpenStax, a single management textbook), Principles of Management converts that exposure into credit faster.
Military test-out (active duty, reserves, or eligible veteran). DANTES funds DSST exam fees in full for eligible service members; CLEP fees may also be reimbursable depending on branch and program. With fee cost neutralized, DSST Organizational Behavior is a strong sitting because the named-theory content rewards focused flashcard time during deployment downtime. Take Principles of Management alongside if your degree audit has a separate management slot; the prep overlap on the leading function is your friend.
Pre-MBA applicant with a business undergraduate background. If your transcript already shows Principles of Management coverage from a college course, Organizational Behavior is the higher-value of the two. The leading-function content review gives you an efficient prep path, and the theoretical depth signals seriousness to admissions committees evaluating non-traditional preparation.
Tradeoffs to weigh before scheduling
Slot mapping. Confirm before paying for either exam that your specific degree audit has the slot the exam will fill. At TESU, Principles of Management clears MAN 301 and Organizational Behavior clears PSY 361, so the two exams do not fight for the same credit. At Excelsior and Charter Oak, the mapping is school-specific. At non-Big-Three schools, mapping varies more widely: some schools accept one and not the other, some map both to business credit, some map Organizational Behavior to upper-division psychology. Five minutes of email to the registrar before paying $97 or $100 saves a wasted exam fee.
Prep transfer. The leading function overlap is real. Motivation theories (Maslow, Herzberg, McClelland, expectancy, equity, goal-setting, reinforcement) and leadership theories (trait, behavioral, contingency, transformational, transactional, servant) appear on both exams. A student preparing for one exam already covers a meaningful share of the other's leading-function content. If you plan to take both, study the leading function once and split the remaining prep between management functions on one side and individual or organizational levels on the other.
Pacing. Principles of Management gives you 54 seconds per question. Organizational Behavior gives you 72 seconds. Both are comfortable pacing budgets for recognition-driven multiple-choice; neither rewards lingering on any single question. Mark and move on, then return to flagged questions at the end.
Score timing and finality. Both exams print to the screen at submission, so you know whether you passed before you leave the testing center. Both allow score sends to schools after the fact; you choose which scores to send. A low score on either does not have to follow you.
Yes, and many business-degree audits have a slot for each. At TESU, Principles of Management fills MAN 301 and Organizational Behavior fills PSY 361, so the two exams do not compete for the same course requirement. At Excelsior and Charter Oak, the mapping shape is similar but the specific course numbers differ. Confirm with your receiving registrar before scheduling, then take both if the audit supports it. The leading-function prep overlap makes the combined study cycle shorter than two unrelated exams would be.
Which is easier for working managers?+
Principles of Management. The four-management-functions structure formalizes vocabulary working managers already use daily, and the question style rewards recognition of frameworks attached to applied practice. Organizational Behavior is workable for working managers too, but the named-theory density is higher and the framing is more psychological than operational. If you are a working manager with no recent psychology course, Principles of Management is the faster pass.
Do they share study materials?+
On the leading function, yes. Motivation theories (Maslow, Herzberg, McClelland, expectancy, equity, goal-setting) and leadership theories (Fiedler, Hersey-Blanchard, path-goal, transactional, transformational) appear on both. A single block of named-theory flashcards covers a meaningful share of each exam's leading-function content. Outside the leading function, the prep diverges: Principles of Management adds the four-functions structure, strategic management, and control systems, while Organizational Behavior adds individual psychology (perception, attitudes, personality), group dynamics, and organizational culture.
Which transfers better at the Big Three?+
Principles of Management has the cleaner transfer story at TESU, Excelsior, and Charter Oak because the four-functions framework maps to a standard management course at every school. Organizational Behavior transfers cleanly at the Big Three too, but the receiving department varies more (psychology at TESU, business at most others). For non-Big-Three schools, Principles of Management is accepted at about 2,900 colleges versus about 1,900 for Organizational Behavior, so the broader acceptance footprint favors the CLEP if you are uncertain where you will eventually apply credit.
Is the slightly lower CLEP fee meaningful?+
The CLEP is $97 and the DSST is $100 as of May 2026. The fee gap is small enough that it should not drive the decision; pick the exam whose slot your degree audit needs. For eligible military service members, DANTES funds DSST fees in full, which flips the cost comparison in the other direction. CLEP fees may also be reimbursable depending on branch and program; check with your education services officer before paying out of pocket.
How do the motivation-theory sections overlap?+
Substantially. Both exams test Maslow's hierarchy of needs, Herzberg's two-factor theory, expectancy theory (Vroom), equity theory (Adams), and goal-setting theory (Locke). Organizational Behavior adds Alderfer's ERG, McClelland's needs (achievement, affiliation, power), and reinforcement theory at greater depth. Principles of Management touches the same theories but emphasizes how a manager would apply them rather than the underlying psychological mechanism. If you study Organizational Behavior thoroughly, you cover almost everything Principles of Management needs on motivation. The reverse is also largely true, with the application-versus-mechanism framing being the main difference.
Is one of them better preparation for an MBA?+
Organizational Behavior. The named-theory density and the psychological framing more closely match how MBA programs teach OB as a foundational course. Principles of Management is the broader undergraduate management foundation; Organizational Behavior is the deeper behavioral foundation. Pre-MBA applicants benefit most from taking both, with Organizational Behavior as the marginally higher-signal exam for admissions if you have to pick one.
What about DSST Principles of Supervision: is it the same exam?+
No. DSST Principles of Supervision is the applied first-line-supervisory exam: how to coach, evaluate, discipline, and develop direct reports. It overlaps with Organizational Behavior on motivation and leadership content (roughly 30 to 40 percent shared), but the rest of Supervision is applied first-line practice rather than theoretical foundations. If your degree audit has slots for both, taking Supervision and Organizational Behavior is a valid combination; if you have to pick one, Organizational Behavior carries more theoretical weight and Supervision carries more applied weight.
Are both exams accepted at the Big Three?+
Yes. TESU, Excelsior, and Charter Oak all accept CLEP Principles of Management at the ACE-recommended 50 and DSST Organizational Behavior at the ACE-recommended 400. The slot mapping varies by school. TESU's mapping (MAN 301 and PSY 361 respectively) is unusual in that the two exams fill different departments. Confirm with your receiving registrar before scheduling so you know which course requirement each exam will close.
