Economics and political science on CLEP Social Sciences and History: the 22 percent that rewards working knowledge
Economics carries about 11 percent of the exam and political science / US government carries another 11 percent, around 26 of 120 questions combined. The exam tests both at recognition level: identify the framework, recognize the named concept, distinguish similar terms. This guide walks supply and demand, market structures, fiscal vs monetary policy, the three branches, civil liberties vs civil rights, and the canonical Supreme Court cases.

Economics and political science on CLEP Social Sciences and History together account for roughly 22 percent of the exam, around 26 of 120 questions. The exam tests both at recognition level: identify the framework, recognize the named concept, distinguish similar terms.
I took CLEP Social Sciences and History to fill the SOS 101 and SOS 102 slots at Thomas Edison State University, and I also took CLEP Principles of Microeconomics, CLEP Principles of Macroeconomics, and CLEP American Government for additional credit. The cross-comparison is the angle I can offer that other guides cannot: the survey treatment here is shallower than what those three subject CLEPs test, and the most common mistake among readers who plan to take all four is over-preparing this 22-percent block as if it carried subject-CLEP depth.
Why economics and political science deserve a dedicated prep block
These two disciplines carry roughly 26 questions, more than world history's 6 to 10 and more than any single social-science theorist block. Walk in with a working vocabulary for both and you have done close to a quarter of the work to clear a passing 50. Walk in cold on either side and the gap is hard to close from sociology and psychology alone.
The College Board weights economics and political science at roughly 11 percent each. The question style mirrors the history block: read the scenario, identify the named concept, pick the answer. No graph-reading at subject-CLEP depth, no calculus, no constitutional-law analysis. Recognize that a price ceiling causes a shortage, that the Fed sets monetary policy, that judicial review traces to Marbury v. Madison.
When I took the subject-specific CLEPs in micro, macro, and American Government, the depth difference was obvious. Those exams ask you to shift an aggregate-demand curve under a specific scenario and to compute the money multiplier. This exam asks you to recognize that expansionary fiscal policy increases aggregate demand and that the Fed controls the money supply. Over-investing in subject-CLEP depth costs hours that return at most one or two extra questions here.
Frequently asked questions
How much economics is on CLEP Social Sciences and History?+
Roughly 11 percent, around 13 questions on the 120-question exam. Micro and macro split that block evenly, about 6 to 7 questions each. Recognition level: identify the concept from a one-sentence scenario, not derive a curve shift from first principles.
How much political science and US government is on the exam?+
Roughly 11 percent, around 13 questions. Constitutional structure (three branches, federalism, Bill of Rights, Reconstruction Amendments) carries the largest share, followed by Supreme Court case recognition, then political parties and elections at the margin. The exam treats civil liberties (1st Amendment) and civil rights (14th Amendment equal protection) as distinct categories.
Do I need to know the math behind supply and demand, or just recognize the concepts?+
Recognition is enough. The exam does not ask you to compute elasticities or shift curves with numerical values; it asks you to recognize that a price ceiling causes a shortage, that an increase in consumer income shifts demand for a normal good to the right, that price elasticity less than 1 means inelastic demand. The subject-specific CLEP Principles of Microeconomics tests the math; this exam does not.
Alex Stone founded Flying Prep after earning her bachelor's degree from Thomas Edison State University using 27 CLEP and DSST exams to test out of 99 credits. She built Flying Prep to help working adults and returning students take the same path.
Microeconomics: supply, demand, and market structures
Microeconomics covers roughly 6 to 7 questions on the 120-question exam, half of the 11-percent economics block. The exam tests the canonical intro-micro vocabulary: supply and demand, equilibrium, elasticity, market structures, externalities, marginal analysis.
Supply and demand is the highest-frequency micro topic. The exam reliably distinguishes a movement along a curve (caused by a change in the good's own price) from a shift of the entire curve (caused by any other determinant: input costs, consumer income, prices of substitutes or complements, expectations, number of buyers or sellers). The classic trap is treating a shift as a movement.
Elasticity questions test three flavors. Price elasticity of demand: values greater than 1 are elastic, values less than 1 are inelastic. Income elasticity sorts normal goods (positive) from inferior goods (negative). Cross-price elasticity sorts substitutes (positive) from complements (negative). The exam asks you to read a one-sentence description and name the flavor, not to compute.
Market structures form the most-tested comparison table in the micro block. Four structures, distinguished by the number of firms, the nature of the product, the barriers to entry, and the firm's pricing power:
Market structure
Number of firms
Product
Barriers to entry
Pricing power
Example
Perfect competition
Many
Identical
None
Price taker
Agricultural commodities
Monopolistic competition
Many
Differentiated
Low
Some, limited by substitutes
Restaurants, retail apparel
Oligopoly
Few
Identical or differentiated
High
Significant, interdependent
Airlines, automobiles, telecom
Monopoly
One
Unique, no close substitutes
Very high (often legal or natural)
Price maker
Local utility (water, electricity)
The exam returns to externalities (costs or benefits affecting third parties), public goods (non-rival and non-excludable, like national defense or street lights), and the tragedy of the commons (shared resources overused because no one bears the full cost). Marginal analysis shows up as the profit-maximization rule: a firm produces where marginal revenue equals marginal cost.
For subject-CLEP depth, see the CLEP Principles of Microeconomics pillar. If you are only taking Social Sciences and History, the recognition-level coverage in this guide is enough.
Macroeconomics: GDP, inflation, and the Fed
Macroeconomics covers the other half of the 11-percent economics block, around 6 to 7 questions. The vocabulary is denser than the micro block, but the question style is the same recognition pattern.
GDP is the central concept. Gross domestic product measures the value of all final goods and services produced within a country's borders in a given period. Real GDP adjusts for inflation; nominal GDP does not. The three approaches (income, expenditure, production) give the same total. The exam expects you to distinguish GDP from GNP (gross national product, which counts output by citizens regardless of location).
Inflation and unemployment are the two macro indicators the exam returns to most. Inflation is measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI); the exam distinguishes demand-pull inflation (too much spending chasing too few goods) from cost-push inflation (rising input costs). Unemployment splits into three named flavors: frictional (between jobs), structural (skill mismatch), and cyclical (driven by recession). The Phillips curve captures the short-run inverse relationship between inflation and unemployment at conceptual level.
The business cycle has four phases the exam returns to: expansion, peak, contraction or recession, and trough. The aggregate-supply and aggregate-demand (AS-AD) model is the macro framework for analyzing how policy affects output and prices, again at recognition level.
Fiscal and monetary policy are the highest-leverage comparison in the macro block. Fiscal policy: Congress and the executive, taxes and spending. Monetary policy: the Federal Reserve, interest rates and the money supply. The two are routinely confused.
The Fed's three monetary tools are reliably tested. Open-market operations (buying and selling government bonds) are the most-used tool. The discount rate is the rate the Fed charges banks for short-term loans. Reserve requirements set the fraction of deposits banks must hold rather than lend out. Knowing which tool is expansionary versus contractionary covers most Fed questions.
Economic frameworks on one side, constitutional foundations on the other. Twenty-two percent of the exam, all at recognition level.
Constitutional foundations: three branches plus federalism
Political science and US government cover the other 11 percent of the exam, around 13 questions, and the constitutional foundations carry the largest share of that block.
The three branches of the federal government, with their named powers and the checks they receive, form the core comparison. The exam asks you to recognize which branch holds which power and which check restrains which branch.
Branch
Named powers
Checks received
Term
Legislative (Congress)
Make laws, declare war, tax, regulate commerce, confirm appointments, ratify treaties
Presidential veto, judicial review by Supreme Court
Appointment by President, confirmation by Senate, congressional power to set jurisdiction and remove judges by impeachment
Life tenure during good behavior
Federalism splits power between the federal government and the states. The federal government holds enumerated powers under Article I, Section 8 (coin money, regulate interstate commerce, declare war); states hold reserved powers under the 10th Amendment (police power, education, intrastate commerce). The supremacy clause (Article VI) establishes federal law as supreme when the two conflict. Concurrent powers (taxation, law enforcement) belong to both.
The Bill of Rights covers the first 10 amendments (1791). The exam returns to the 1st (speech, religion, press, assembly, petition), 2nd (bear arms), 4th (search and seizure), 5th (self-incrimination, due process, eminent domain), 6th (speedy trial and counsel), 8th (cruel and unusual punishment), and 10th (reserved to the states). Recognition by amendment number plus the named right covers most Bill-of-Rights questions.
The Reconstruction Amendments (13th, 14th, 15th, ratified 1865 to 1870) are the second cluster. The 13th abolished slavery; the 14th established birthright citizenship, due process, and equal protection at the state level; the 15th extended voting rights regardless of race. The 14th's equal-protection clause is the single most-litigated constitutional provision and underwrites the bulk of subsequent civil-rights case law, from Plessy through Brown forward. See the Reconstruction Amendments deep dive for historical context.
The exam reliably distinguishes civil liberties from civil rights. Civil liberties are protections from government interference, mostly housed in the 1st Amendment: speech, religion, press, assembly, petition. Civil rights are protections from discrimination and guarantees of equal treatment, grounded in the 14th Amendment's equal-protection clause and the Reconstruction-era statutes.
The exam asks you to sort scenarios into one bucket or the other. A government attempt to prohibit a religious practice raises a civil-liberties question (1st Amendment free exercise). A state law that treats two groups differently for no legitimate reason raises a civil-rights question (14th Amendment equal protection). The distinction is consistent across exam forms.
The Supreme Court cases the exam returns to are a short, canonical list. Recognition of the case name with the principle it established covers most case-law questions.
Case
Year decided
Principle established
Marbury v. Madison
1803
Judicial review: the Supreme Court has the power to strike down acts of Congress that conflict with the Constitution
McCulloch v. Maryland
1819
Federal supremacy and implied powers: Congress can charter a national bank under the necessary-and-proper clause; states cannot tax federal institutions
Plessy v. Ferguson
1896
"Separate but equal" doctrine permitting racial segregation (overturned by Brown)
Brown v. Board of Education
1954
Racial segregation in public schools is unconstitutional under the 14th Amendment's equal-protection clause
Miranda v. Arizona
1966
Police must inform suspects of their rights to remain silent and to counsel before custodial interrogation
Roe v. Wade
1973
Recognized a constitutional right to abortion grounded in privacy (subsequently overturned by Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health, 2022)
Citizens United v. FEC
2010
Independent political spending by corporations and unions is protected under the 1st Amendment
Marbury established judicial review. McCulloch established federal supremacy and the foundation of federalism doctrine. Brown overturned Plessy and is the canonical equal-protection case. Miranda is the canonical criminal-procedure case. Citizens United is the canonical modern campaign-finance case. Roe and Dobbs together are the canonical privacy and substantive-due-process pair; both names are worth recognizing.
The remaining political-science block covers the structure of the American political system. The exam tests recognition of the two-party system (Democratic and Republican), with third parties (Libertarian, Green, the Progressive Party of 1912) playing a limited role driven by single-member districts and winner-take-all rules. The classic explanation is Duverger's law: single-member-district plurality systems tend toward two parties.
The Electoral College selects the President. Each state has electors equal to its congressional delegation; 270 electoral votes are required to win. The exam asks you to recognize that the Electoral College, not the popular vote, decides the presidency.
Interest groups influence policy through lobbying, grassroots mobilization, campaign contributions, and litigation. PACs and super PACs are the named vehicles for organized political spending. The iron triangle (congressional committees, executive-branch agencies, and interest groups) is worth recognizing by name.
How economics and political science are tested: the question patterns
The exam reuses a small set of question patterns across both disciplines. Recognizing the patterns is half the work.
Pattern
Example phrasing
What it really tests
Concept from scenario
"A government imposes a price ceiling on rent. The most likely result is..."
Recognize that a binding price ceiling causes a shortage
Tool from goal
"The Federal Reserve wishes to combat inflation. Which action is most appropriate?"
Sell bonds, raise the discount rate, or raise reserve requirements
Curve shift or movement
"If consumer income increases for a normal good, the demand curve will..."
Shift to the right
Branch from power
"Which branch of the federal government has the power to ratify treaties?"
Senate (legislative branch)
Case from principle
"Which Supreme Court case established the doctrine of judicial review?"
Marbury v. Madison
Amendment from right
"Which amendment protects against unreasonable searches and seizures?"
The 4th Amendment
Externality recognition
"A factory emits pollution that affects nearby residents. This is an example of..."
A negative externality
Each pattern rewards recognition over recall. None require numerical computation; none require essay response; none require knowledge of statutes or cases outside the canonical list above. A reader who can name the concept from the scenario, name the case from the principle, and name the policy tool from the goal has the exam's recognition vocabulary covered.
Memorization sequence: vocabulary drill for the 22-percent block
A 90-minute drill that locks in economics and political science. Done across two or three sessions in the final week of prep, this brings the 22-percent block to a confident pass without over-investing in subject-CLEP depth.
Minutes 0 to 20: micro vocabulary from memory. Write the four market structures with one example each. Write the three elasticity flavors with their sign or threshold values. Write the three external-effect concepts (externalities, public goods, tragedy of the commons) with a one-sentence definition each. Write the profit-maximization rule (MR equals MC). If you cannot produce all of these without notes, redo this step before moving on.
Minutes 20 to 40: macro vocabulary from memory. Write the GDP expenditure formula (C plus I plus G plus net exports). Write the three unemployment flavors and the two inflation flavors. Write the four business-cycle phases. Write the fiscal-vs-monetary policy table from memory: who runs each, what their tools are, and which direction the tools move under expansionary versus contractionary policy. Write the Fed's three monetary tools.
Minutes 40 to 65: constitutional and case law from memory. Write the three branches with their named powers and the checks they receive. Write the supremacy clause and the 10th Amendment in your own words. Write seven Supreme Court cases (Marbury, McCulloch, Plessy, Brown, Miranda, Roe and Dobbs together, Citizens United) with the principle each established.
Minutes 65 to 90: take 25 practice questions across both disciplines. Twelve economics, thirteen political science. Review every wrong answer against the canonical vocabulary above, not against a full textbook. The point is to repair specific recognition gaps, not to re-read intro material.
The drill is write-from-memory, not re-read. Durable recognition is built by retrieval, not re-reading. Recognition under cold-start exam conditions is a different skill from recognition while looking at a textbook page, and the drill is what builds it.

Which Supreme Court cases are worth memorizing?
+
Marbury v. Madison (judicial review), McCulloch v. Maryland (federal supremacy and implied powers), Plessy v. Ferguson (separate but equal, overturned), Brown v. Board (school desegregation under the 14th Amendment), Miranda v. Arizona (Miranda warnings), Roe v. Wade (privacy right to abortion, overturned by Dobbs in 2022), and Citizens United v. FEC (corporate political spending). Recognition of the case name plus the principle each established covers most case-law questions.
Are the Reconstruction Amendments tested in the political-science block or the history block?+
Both. The history block asks you to identify the Reconstruction era and its post-Civil-War context; the political-science block asks you to recognize the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments and what each established. The 14th's equal-protection clause is the highest-leverage single provision in the political-science block because it underwrites the subsequent civil-rights case law.
How does this differ from CLEP American Government as a subject-specific exam?+
CLEP American Government tests the same vocabulary at far greater depth: congressional committee structure, the legislative process step by step, specific campaign-finance provisions, the federal bureaucracy, detailed Supreme Court doctrine. Social Sciences and History tests at recognition level: name the branch, name the case, name the clause. I took both, and the survey treatment here is shallower. Over-preparing with American Government materials is a common mistake if you are only taking this exam.
Where should I cut prep time if I am short on hours in this 22-percent block?+
Cut economics depth first if you have seen any intro-econ content in the last few years. The vocabulary is stable and the recognition step is short. Reallocate to constitutional foundations and Supreme Court case-recognition, where students without a recent American Government course tend to walk in thinnest.
Is the AS-AD model tested in detail?+
At recognition level only. The exam asks you to recognize that expansionary fiscal policy shifts aggregate demand to the right, that contractionary monetary policy shifts it to the left, and that a positive supply shock shifts aggregate supply to the right. You do not need to derive the model or compute the multiplier numerically. The subject-specific CLEP Principles of Macroeconomics tests AS-AD at full depth; this exam does not.
