Sociology and psychology on CLEP Social Sciences and History together account for roughly 23 percent of the exam, around 28 of 120 questions. Beyond the named theorists, the exam tests substantive frameworks: stratification, deviance, learning, memory, and the classic social-psychology experiments by what they demonstrated.

I took CLEP Social Sciences and History for my degree at Thomas Edison State University, where it filled the SOS 101 and SOS 102 slots in a single sitting. The sociology-and-psychology block was where the named-theorist drill paid off first, but the frameworks beyond the theorists (stratification systems, reinforcement schedules, the Milgram and Asch experiments, the DSM categories) carried a second wave of points that the theorist drill alone would have left on the table.
Why the framework block deserves its own treatment, separate from the theorists
The named theorists satellite covers WHO. This satellite covers WHAT: the frameworks the exam tests at the concept level with no theorist name attached. The stem describes a phenomenon, the answer choices are concept names, and the question is unanswerable from theorist recognition alone. Stratification systems, the demographic transition, memory stages, reinforcement schedules, the DSM-5 categories, the classic social-psychology experiments. These are tested by content, not by attribution. Skip either block and you sacrifice the other half of the sociology-and-psychology share of the exam.
Sociology beyond the theorists: stratification, family, and deviance
Sociology runs about 13 percent of the exam, around 15 to 17 questions. Roughly half attach to a named theorist (covered in the theorists satellite). The other half tests substantive frameworks: how societies are stratified, how families are structured, how deviance is socially defined, and how demographic change unfolds.
Stratification and social class
The exam tests three stratification systems at recognition level:

The exam's most common framing asks you to match a society to its system. Within class systems, the exam tests two mobility distinctions: intergenerational mobility (movement between parents' class position and children's), and intragenerational mobility (movement within a single person's lifetime, tracked by occupation changes). It also distinguishes wealth (total assets minus debts, accumulated over time) from income (money received in a given period). Wealth is the more durable measure of class position. The US class structure is tested at recognition level: upper, upper-middle, lower-middle, working, and lower.
Race, ethnicity, and gender
Terms most likely to appear in answer choices:
- Minority group: a group with less power than the dominant group, regardless of numerical size (apartheid-era South Africa is the canonical example of a numerical majority that was a sociological minority).
- Prejudice is an attitude (a negative judgment about a group); discrimination is a behavior (acting on that attitude). The exam tests the distinction directly.
- Ethnocentrism: judging another culture by the standards of your own. Cultural relativism (associated with Boas in the theorists satellite) is the opposite stance.
- Institutional racism: racism embedded in the policies and procedures of organizations, distinct from individual prejudice.
- Assimilation vs pluralism: absorption of a minority group into the dominant culture vs coexistence of multiple cultural groups without forced absorption.
Gender is tested through the sex vs gender distinction: sex refers to biological categories, gender to the socially constructed roles attached to them. Feminism waves appear at recognition: first wave (suffrage), second wave (workplace and reproductive rights, 1960s and 1970s), third wave (intersectionality, 1990s onward).
Family structures
The exam tests four cross-cutting family distinctions:

The pattern names are the testable items. Recognize that polygyny and polyandry are both forms of polygamy, and that neolocal residence and bilateral descent are the modern industrialized norm.
Deviance and social control
Deviance is socially defined behavior that violates norms. The exam tests three explanations:
- Strain theory (Merton): deviance emerges when socially valued goals (wealth, success) are misaligned with legitimate means. Strain theory builds on Durkheim's anomie but is tested as its own concept.
- Labeling theory: deviance is not inherent in an act but in the social reaction to it. Being labeled deviant changes the labeled person's identity and trajectory.
- Differential association (Sutherland): deviant behavior is learned through interaction with others who model it.
Social control splits into informal (family, peers, community pressure) and formal (laws, courts, police). Crime types appear at recognition: violent, property, white-collar, organized, victimless.
Demography and urbanization
The exam tests the demographic transition as a four-stage model:

The exam asks you to identify the stage from a description. Most low-income countries sit in stage 2 or 3; high-income countries are in stage 4.
Related terms tested at recognition: crude birth rate (births per 1,000 per year), crude death rate (deaths per 1,000), total fertility rate (average children per woman over a lifetime), net migration rate (in-migration minus out-migration per 1,000). Urbanization shows up through suburbanization in mid-20th-century America and the broader concentration of population in cities. Globalization appears at recognition only: the integration of economies, cultures, and populations across national boundaries.
Research methods
The exam tests the basic toolkit at recognition:
- Quantitative vs qualitative: numbers and statistical analysis vs descriptive interpretation of meanings.
- Survey (structured questionnaire, large samples), interview (open-ended, smaller samples), ethnography (immersive observation), experiment (controlled comparison).
- Correlation vs causation: two variables moving together does not prove one causes the other (ice cream sales and drowning deaths correlate, but summer weather drives both).
- Validity (the measure captures what it claims to measure) vs reliability (the measure produces consistent results across repeated trials).

Psychology beyond the theorists: learning, memory, and the classic social experiments
Psychology runs about 10 percent of the exam, around 12 questions. Like sociology, roughly half of the points attach to named theorists (Freud, Piaget, Erikson, Maslow, Pavlov, Skinner, covered in the theorists satellite). The other half tests substantive frameworks and classic experimental studies by content rather than by name.
States of consciousness
Sleep cycles through NREM (non-rapid eye movement, stages 1 through 3 of progressively deeper sleep, with stage 3 as deep slow-wave) and REM (rapid eye movement, when most vivid dreaming occurs; body paralyzed, brain activity resembles wakefulness). A full cycle runs roughly 90 minutes; REM proportion increases through the night.
Hypnosis is tested as a state of focused attention and increased suggestibility. Drugs are categorized by effect: depressants (alcohol, barbiturates, opioids), stimulants (caffeine, nicotine, cocaine, amphetamines), hallucinogens (LSD, psilocybin). Match the drug to the category.
Learning
Classical and operant conditioning attach to Pavlov and Skinner in the theorists satellite. The framework-level content the exam tests beyond the names:
Reinforcement schedules under operant conditioning:

The canonical question form names a real-world scenario (slot machine, vending machine, paycheck every two weeks, random pop quizzes) and asks you to identify the schedule. Variable ratio produces the most persistent behavior, which is why gambling is hard to extinguish.
Observational learning is associated with Albert Bandura's Bobo doll experiment (children imitate aggressive behavior they observe in adults). Behavior learned by watching others, without direct reinforcement. Recognize the Bobo doll study by name and content.
Memory
The exam tests the standard three-stage model:

Long-term memory splits into:
- Declarative (explicit): facts and events you consciously recall. Subdivided into semantic (general knowledge, like the capital of France) and episodic (personal experiences, like what you ate yesterday).
- Procedural (implicit): skills and habits performed without conscious recall (riding a bike, typing).
The three-step memory process is encoding, storage, and retrieval. Forgetting is tested through proactive interference (older memories disrupt newer learning) and retroactive interference (newer memories disrupt older recall).
Cognition
Two named decision-making heuristics:
- Availability heuristic: judging probability by how easily examples come to mind. Recent and vivid examples inflate perceived probability (plane-crash risk after a publicized crash).
- Representativeness heuristic: judging category membership by similarity to a stereotype of the category. Produces base-rate neglect.
Problem-solving terms: algorithm (step-by-step procedure guaranteed to solve), heuristic (shortcut, not guaranteed), insight (sudden recognition of a solution).
Language acquisition appears at recognition: Chomsky's nativist position (innate language-acquisition device) contrasts with behaviorist accounts (learned through reinforcement). Critical-period hypothesis (language acquisition is easiest before puberty) is the testable framing.
Intelligence
IQ is tested as a score on a normal distribution centered at 100 with a standard deviation of 15. Roughly 68 percent of the population falls within one standard deviation (85 to 115), 95 percent within two (70 to 130).
Two frameworks at recognition:
- Gardner's multiple intelligences: linguistic, logical-mathematical, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, spatial, interpersonal, intrapersonal, naturalist. The expansion beyond the single-IQ view is the testable contrast.
- Emotional intelligence (EQ): the ability to recognize and manage emotions in oneself and others. Associated with Daniel Goleman's popularization.
Personality
Beyond the psychodynamic approach (Freud, in the theorists satellite) and the humanistic approach (Maslow, Rogers, in the theorists satellite), the exam tests the trait approach through the Big Five model. The OCEAN acronym lines up the five traits:
- Openness to experience (curiosity, willingness to try new things)
- Conscientiousness (organization, dependability, self-discipline)
- Extraversion (sociability, assertiveness, energy)
- Agreeableness (cooperation, trust, compassion)
- Neuroticism (emotional instability, anxiety, mood variability)
The exam tests the acronym, the trait names, and the recognition that the Big Five is the dominant trait-theory framework in contemporary research psychology.
Abnormal psychology
The DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition, American Psychiatric Association, published 2013, text revision DSM-5-TR 2022) is the standard US classification system for mental disorders. Major categories tested at recognition only:
- Mood disorders: major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder.
- Anxiety disorders: generalized anxiety, panic disorder, specific phobias.
- Schizophrenia spectrum: positive symptoms (hallucinations, delusions) vs negative symptoms (flat affect, social withdrawal).
- Personality disorders: antisocial, borderline, narcissistic.
- OCD and trauma-related (OCD, PTSD): separate DSM-5 chapters, distinct from anxiety disorders.
Match the symptom description to the category name. The exam does not test diagnostic criteria.
Treatment
Three psychotherapy approaches at recognition:
- Psychodynamic (descended from Freud): exploring unconscious conflicts and early experiences.
- Cognitive-behavioral (CBT): identifying and changing dysfunctional thought patterns and behaviors. The most empirically supported approach for anxiety and depression.
- Humanistic (descended from Rogers, Maslow): self-actualization and unconditional positive regard.
Biomedical treatments at recognition: antidepressants (SSRIs as the most common class), antianxiety (benzodiazepines), antipsychotics (schizophrenia and severe psychotic disorders), mood stabilizers (lithium for bipolar disorder).
What the exam asks about Milgram, Asch, and Zimbardo
Classic social-psychology experiments are tested by name and by what they demonstrated. This is the single highest-leverage block in psychology beyond the named theorists, because the experiments come up under both psychology and sociology framings and the question stem is almost always recognition-style.

Two more concepts tested without a single experimental study attached:
- In-group vs out-group bias: favoring members of your own social group over outsiders.
- Fundamental attribution error: attributing others' behavior to character (dispositional causes) while attributing one's own behavior to circumstances (situational causes).

The recognition target is the experiment name and the one-line finding. The exam does not ask for specific obedience rates or participant counts. "Which experiment demonstrated obedience to authority?" is the question form; "Milgram" is the answer.
Memorization sequence for the framework block
A focused two-hour drill that locks in the framework content beyond the theorists. Spread across three sessions in the final week of prep.

Write the four family-structure distinctions (composition, marriage form, descent, residence) with named forms. Write the demographic transition's four stages with birth and death rates. The drill is recall, not re-read. The exam tests recognition, but durable recognition is built by retrieval against blank prompts. Frequently asked questions
What's the most-tested classic social-psychology experiment?
Milgram's obedience study is the single most-cited experiment on this exam. Asch's conformity study and Zimbardo's Stanford Prison Experiment are close behind. All three appear by name and by one-line finding (obedience to authority, conformity to group pressure, the power of situational roles). The bystander effect, cognitive dissonance, and groupthink fill out the second tier.
Do I need to know specific Milgram-experiment statistics?
No. The exam tests the one-line finding (most participants obeyed authority even when administering what they believed were dangerous shocks), not the percentages or participant counts. Same for Asch and Zimbardo.
How is the DSM tested on CLEP Social Sciences and History?
At category-recognition level only. Know that the DSM is the standard US classification system for mental disorders, that the current edition is the 5th, and that it groups disorders into major categories (mood, anxiety, schizophrenia spectrum, personality, OCD and trauma-related). Match a symptom description to a category. The exam does not test diagnostic criteria or differences between DSM-IV and DSM-5.
What about the Stanford Prison Experiment given the controversies?
The exam still tests it at the recognition level documented in standard introductory psychology textbooks. Recent reanalyses have raised methodological and ethical concerns about Zimbardo's 1971 study, but the canonical exam finding (situational roles rapidly shape behavior) is the testable item. Recognize the experiment by name and finding; the methodological critique is outside scope.
How are reinforcement schedules tested?
By scenario. The stem describes a reinforcement pattern (slot machine, vending machine, two-week paycheck, pop quizzes) and the answer choices are the four schedules. Variable ratio is the most-tested because it produces the most persistent behavior, the framing the exam uses to discuss gambling.
Do I need to know proactive vs retroactive interference?
Yes, at recognition. Proactive: older memories disrupt new learning. Retroactive: new memories disrupt older recall (you learn a new password and can no longer remember the old one).
How is the demographic transition tested?
The stem describes a society's birth and death rates and asks you to identify the stage. Stage 1 (high birth, high death) and stage 4 (low birth, low death) bracket the transition; stages 2 and 3 sit in the middle. The framing pairs the rates with a development level (pre-industrial through post-industrial).
Should I drill the framework block separately from the theorists block?
Yes, in two distinct sessions. Theorists are tested by name-to-concept (covered in the named theorists satellite); frameworks by scenario-to-name. Drill theorists first (shorter, locks in faster), then frameworks, then mix them with the history portion.
